When the outside air temperature and humidity are within acceptable limits, the economizer opens dampers to allow a significant amount of outside air to enter the building. There are several types of economizers, including air-side and water-side economizers. Air-side economizers directly use cool outside air for cooling. Water-side economizers use cool outdoor air to cool the building's chilled water loop, which then circulates to cool the building. The control systems for economizers are crucial to ensure they operate effectively and don't inadvertently bring in air that is too hot or too humid, which would negate the energy-saving benefits. Proper commissioning and maintenance are essential for optimal performance and longevity of economizer systems.
