An eindwerkstuk, literally “final assignment,” is a substantial, independent project that marks the culmination of a student’s secondary education in Dutch-speaking education systems. It usually involves selecting a topic, planning the work, conducting research or building a product, and reporting findings or presenting results. The aim is to demonstrate the student’s ability to apply knowledge, work methodically, and communicate clearly about a complex topic.

Typically, an eindwerkstuk includes a topic proposal, a project plan, a written report or portfolio, and a final product or artifact. It is accompanied by a presentation or defense in front of teachers or a panel. The work is usually supervised by one or more teachers who monitor progress through milestones or interim reports, and students must document their methods and sources.

Assessment is based on criteria such as the quality of research or design, methodological rigor, originality, relevance, and the ability to reflect on what was learned and how it was learned. Communication skills, the structure of the report, and the quality of the oral defense are also considered. In many schools, the eindwerkstuk contributes a substantial portion of the final grade.

Variations exist across tracks and schools. In Dutch-speaking education, the exact format, required length, and assessment scheme differ by school and program; the project can be research-based, design-oriented, or a practical assignment.
