Efferentteihin is a Finnish term used in neuroscience to refer to efferent components of the nervous system, specifically the nerve fibers or neurons that carry signals away from the central nervous system to peripheral effectors. In vertebrates, efferent pathways include somatic motor neurons that activate skeletal muscles and autonomic efferents that regulate involuntary targets such as smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands. Efferent neurons originate in the brainstem or spinal cord and project their axons to peripheral targets. Autonomic efferents are organized into sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions, with preganglionic neurons in the central nervous system and postganglionic neurons in autonomic ganglia.
