Ectosymbiosis is a form of symbiotic relationship in which one organism lives on the exterior surface of another. In ectosymbiotic associations, the partner that resides on the surface may be mutualistic, providing benefits to the host; commensal, with little or no effect on the host; or parasitic, harming the host.
