The eIDAS Regulation, full name Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market, is a key piece of European Union legislation. Its primary aim is to ensure that citizens and businesses can securely and conveniently use electronic identification (eID) and trust services across EU member states. This fosters trust in electronic transactions and facilitates the digital single market.

The eIDAS system establishes a framework for the cross-border recognition of national eID schemes. This means that if a country's eID is recognized under eIDAS, its citizens can use it to access online services in other EU countries. The regulation also defines and regulates various trust services, including electronic signatures, electronic seals, time stamps, electronic registered delivery services, and website authentication certificates. These services are designed to provide legal certainty and security for electronic communications and transactions.

By creating a common set of rules and standards, eIDAS aims to reduce barriers to digital trade and services within the EU. It allows for the seamless use of eID for online public services, such as registering a business or filing taxes, and private sector services like online banking or insurance. The goal is to build a more integrated and trustworthy digital environment for all European citizens and businesses.
