Under Swedish law, the primary heirs are the deceased's children, followed by their spouse, parents, siblings, and so on, according to a defined order of inheritance. The dödsbodelägarna collectively own the deceased's estate until it has been fully settled and divided. This process, known as a "bouppteckning" (inventory of the estate) and subsequent "arvskifte" (distribution of inheritance), involves identifying all assets and debts, paying off creditors, and then distributing the remaining assets among the dödsbodelägarna according to law or the will. All dödsbodelägarna typically need to agree on the distribution, or a court-appointed administrator may be involved if disputes arise. Their rights and responsibilities include participating in the estate administration and receiving their rightful share of the inheritance.
