Dichorionic diamniotic pregnancy refers to a type of multiple gestation where there are two fetuses, each enclosed within its own amniotic sac and chorionic sac. This configuration arises from the fertilization of two separate eggs by two separate sperm (dizygotic twinning) or from the splitting of a single fertilized egg at a very early stage of development, typically before the formation of the chorion but after the formation of the amnion.

The presence of two chorionic sacs means there are two separate placentas, though they may be located close to each other and appear fused. Each fetus also has its own amniotic sac filled with amniotic fluid, which surrounds and protects the developing baby. This type of twinning is considered the most common form of twin pregnancy.

Dichorionic diamniotic twins generally have a lower risk of certain complications compared to other types of twin pregnancies, such as monochorionic pregnancies where twins share a placenta. However, all twin pregnancies carry increased risks compared to singleton pregnancies, including preterm birth, low birth weight, and gestational hypertension. Regular prenatal monitoring is crucial for dichorionic diamniotic pregnancies to ensure the well-being of both fetuses and the mother. The sex of the twins can be the same or different, depending on whether they originated from a single fertilized egg or two separate fertilized eggs.
