Dutasteride is a medication classified as a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. Its primary use is in the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. By inhibiting both type 1 and type 2 isoforms of 5-alpha-reductase, dutasteride reduces the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a key hormone responsible for the growth of prostate tissue.
