Dueles, sometimes written as duels, refer to formal combats between two individuals conducted to resolve a dispute, defend honor, or settle a grievance. They typically involve an agreed set of rules, arranged weapons, and a system of seconds or referees who manage terms and safety.

The term derives from the Latin duellum via Old French duel. In practice, dueles have appeared in many cultures, though the form and rules have varied across regions and eras.

Historically, dueles were most common in Europe and the Americas from the late medieval period through the 19th century. They served as a social mechanism to resolve insults or threats to reputation, though they were not universally accepted and were often illegal or discouraged by authorities.

A challenge usually began with the claimant presenting the grievance to the opponent and offering terms, including weapon choice and number of shots. Seconds mediated negotiations, and if terms were agreed, the duel proceeded under the stated conditions. The procedure could emphasize formality and decorum, even as it carried real risk of injury or death.

Weapons ranged from swords and rapiers in earlier times to pistols in the modern era. Some dueles were fought at close range to first blood, others used timed rounds or agreed intervals.

Notable duels include the Hamilton–Burr duel in 1804 and numerous other political and military confrontations in earlier centuries. Dueles influenced codes of honor and contributed to evolving legal restrictions that eventually curtailed the practice.

Today, dueles are largely prohibited and rare, surviving mainly in ceremonial, literary, or historical contexts. The topic remains a focal point in discussions of honor culture and interpersonal conflict.
