It derives from the noun druh, meaning kind, type, or species, with a suffix that forms an adverbial or attributive variant. In modern standard Czech, the related forms druhový (adjective) and druhově (adverb) are more common; druhovo is rare and is mainly seen in older literature or in regional/archaic usage.

In practice, druhovo is used to indicate that something is considered or described with respect to its kind. It can appear in discussions of data sets, samples, or characteristics that are grouped according to species or type.
