Downconversion and upconversion are spectroscopic phenomena related to the interaction of light with matter, specifically involving energy transfer between photons and luminescent materials. These processes are fundamental to many optical technologies.

Downconversion, also known as fluorescence or phosphorescence, occurs when a material absorbs a photon of higher energy (shorter wavelength) and subsequently emits one or more photons of lower energy (longer wavelength). The excess energy is typically lost as heat or through vibrational relaxation within the material. This is a common process in everyday items like fluorescent lights and organic LEDs.

Upconversion, conversely, involves the absorption of two or more lower-energy photons to emit a single higher-energy photon. This process is less common in nature and requires specific materials, often containing rare-earth ions, that can efficiently absorb and transfer energy from multiple incoming photons to achieve a higher energy emission. Upconversion is crucial for applications such as bio-imaging, where near-infrared light (which penetrates tissue deeply) can be converted to visible light for detection, and in solar cells to utilize lower-energy photons that would otherwise be wasted.

The efficiency and specific wavelengths involved in both downconversion and upconversion are highly dependent on the chemical composition and structure of the luminescent material.
