Domänupplösning, also known as Domain Name Resolution, is the process of converting human-readable domain names, such as www.example.com, into machine-readable IP addresses, such as 192.0.2.1. This process is fundamental to how the internet works, allowing users to access websites and other online resources by typing in easy-to-remember names instead of numerical IP addresses.

The process typically involves a series of steps. When a user enters a domain name into their browser, their computer first checks its local cache to see if it has recently resolved that domain name. If not, it queries a DNS resolver, usually provided by the user's Internet Service Provider (ISP). The DNS resolver then initiates a series of queries to DNS servers across the internet.

These queries start with a root name server, which directs the resolver to a Top-Level Domain (TLD) name server responsible for the domain's TLD (e.g., .com, .org, .net). The TLD server then points to an authoritative name server for the specific domain. Finally, the authoritative name server provides the IP address associated with the requested domain name. The DNS resolver then returns this IP address to the user's computer, allowing the browser to establish a connection to the web server hosting the website. This entire process usually takes milliseconds.
