Dolomiittikivien, commonly known as dolomite rock, is a sedimentary carbonate rock composed primarily of the mineral dolomite. Dolomite has the chemical formula CaMg(CO3)2. This rock type is classified based on its mineralogy, requiring at least 50% dolomite mineral content. Other minerals, such as calcite, clay, quartz, and iron oxides, can also be present.

Dolomite rock forms through a process called dolomitization, which involves the alteration of pre-existing carbonate rocks, typically limestone, by magnesium-rich fluids. This can occur diagenetically, after the sediment has been deposited, or during the primary deposition of sediment if the environment is magnesium-rich. Environments conducive to dolomitization include restricted marine basins and hypersaline lagoons.

Dolomite rock exhibits a wide range of textures and colors, often appearing white, gray, or brown, though impurities can lead to reddish or yellowish hues. It is generally denser and harder than limestone. Its geological significance lies in its widespread occurrence and its role in various geological formations, including reefs, karst landscapes, and mineral deposits.

Industrially, dolomite rock is a valuable resource. It is quarried and used extensively as a building material, in the production of cement and lime, as a flux in the steel industry, and as an aggregate in road construction. It also finds applications in agriculture as a soil conditioner to neutralize acidity. The unique properties of dolomite, derived from its mineral composition, make it a versatile and important rock type.
