Diureettityyppejä refers to different categories of diuretic medications. Diuretics are substances that promote diuresis, which is the increased production of urine. They are commonly used to treat conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), heart failure, edema (fluid retention), and kidney disease. The primary mechanism of action for most diuretics is to increase the excretion of sodium and water by the kidneys, thereby reducing fluid volume in the body.

There are several major classes of diuretics, distinguished by their site of action in the nephron (the functional unit of the kidney) and their specific mechanisms. Thiazide diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide, are widely used and act on the distal convoluted tubule to inhibit sodium reabsorption. Loop diuretics, like furosemide, are potent and work in the loop of Henle, significantly increasing sodium, potassium, and chloride excretion. Potassium-sparing diuretics, including spironolactone and amiloride, act on the collecting duct and distal tubules, promoting sodium excretion while conserving potassium. Osmotic diuretics, such as mannitol, are filtered by the glomerulus but poorly reabsorbed, drawing water into the renal tubules by osmosis. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, like acetazolamide, are a less common class used for conditions like glaucoma. Each type has specific indications and potential side effects, requiring careful medical supervision for their use.
