Distributions are a fundamental concept in mathematics, particularly in probability theory and statistics. They describe how likely different outcomes or values are to occur for a given random variable. In essence, a distribution provides a framework for understanding the behavior of data or random processes.

There are two main types of distributions: discrete and continuous. Discrete distributions apply to variables that can only take on a finite or countably infinite number of distinct values, such as the number of heads in a series of coin flips. Common examples include the Bernoulli, binomial, and Poisson distributions. Continuous distributions, on the other hand, are used for variables that can take on any value within a given range, like height or temperature. The normal distribution (also known as the Gaussian distribution) is a quintessential example of a continuous distribution, characterized by its bell shape.

Understanding a distribution allows us to calculate probabilities of specific events, estimate parameters, and make predictions. It is a cornerstone for data analysis, allowing researchers and analysts to summarize, interpret, and draw meaningful conclusions from observed data. The shape and characteristics of a distribution provide valuable insights into the underlying phenomena being studied.
