This network comprises the low and medium-voltage power lines, substations, and associated equipment that deliver electricity from the transmission system to end-users such as homes, businesses, and industrial facilities.

The primary role of a DNO is to ensure a safe, reliable, and efficient supply of electricity to its customers. This involves managing the physical infrastructure, responding to faults and power outages, and investing in network upgrades to meet growing demand and integrate new technologies like renewable energy sources. DNOs are typically regulated by government authorities that set performance standards and control prices to protect consumer interests.
