Dispersiivis is a term used in optical physics to describe a material's tendency to refract different wavelengths of light at different angles. This phenomenon is a consequence of the material's refractive index varying with wavelength. When white light, which is composed of a spectrum of wavelengths, passes through a dispersiivis material, each wavelength is bent by a slightly different amount. This separation of white light into its constituent colors is known as dispersion.

The extent of dispersion in a material is quantified by its Abbe number, which is inversely related to the dispersion. A higher Abbe number indicates lower dispersion, meaning the material separates colors less. Conversely, a lower Abbe number signifies higher dispersion. Dispersiivis effects are crucial in the design of optical instruments such as lenses, prisms, and cameras. For instance, in camera lenses, dispersion can lead to chromatic aberration, a visual artifact where colors are not perfectly focused at the same point. Optical engineers use materials with specific dispersiivis properties and combinations of different types of lenses (e.g., achromatic doublets) to minimize or correct for these aberrations.
