Diskonttokorko is the Finnish term for the discount rate, a fundamental concept in finance and economics that refers to the interest rate used to convert future cash flows into present value. It appears in several contexts: as an official central bank rate, as the rate applied when discounting bills or loans, and as the required rate of return used in investment appraisal and valuation.

In valuation and project appraisal, the discount rate reflects the time value of money and the opportunity cost of capital. Present value is calculated by dividing a future amount by (1 + r)^n, where r is the discount rate and n the number of periods. Choosing the discount rate affects net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR) comparisons, and investment decisions.

As a monetary policy tool, a central bank’s discount rate influences short-term interest rates, liquidity, and credit conditions by setting the cost at which banks can borrow from the central bank. Changes in the official discount rate transmit through the banking system and affect borrowing costs for households and firms.

Different types of discount rates include nominal versus real rates (adjusted for inflation), private cost of capital rates, and social discount rates used in public cost–benefit analysis to weight future public benefits. The appropriate rate depends on risk, inflation expectations, time horizon, and policy objectives. Mis-specifying the discount rate can materially alter the perceived desirability of investments and public projects.
