Diodipumppaus, also known as diode pumping, is a technique used in laser technology to generate high-intensity laser pulses. The process involves using a diode laser as the pump source, which is then directed onto a gain medium, typically a crystal or a glass doped with rare-earth ions. The diode laser emits light at a specific wavelength that matches the absorption bands of the dopant ions in the gain medium. When the diode laser light is absorbed by the dopant ions, it excites them to a higher energy level. This excitation process is known as pumping.

The excited ions then release their energy in the form of photons, which are emitted as laser light. The emitted photons can stimulate other excited ions to release their energy, leading to a chain reaction that amplifies the laser beam. This process is known as stimulated emission. The laser beam is then extracted from the gain medium using mirrors, with one mirror being partially reflective to allow some of the laser light to escape as the output pulse.
