The large intestine primarily absorbs water and electrolytes from undigested food, forming feces. This waste material is then stored in the rectum until it is eliminated from the body through defecation. The digestive system is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones and neural signals, ensuring that food is broken down and absorbed efficiently. Any disruption in this process can lead to digestive disorders, such as indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, or more serious conditions like celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease.
