Diffraction occurs when waves, such as X-rays, electrons, or neutrons, encounter an ordered arrangement of atoms or molecules, like those found in crystals. The waves are scattered by the material, and the resulting interference patterns reveal information about the spacing and arrangement of these atomic structures.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) is perhaps the most widely used diffraction method. In XRD, a beam of X-rays is directed at a sample, and the scattered X-rays are detected. The angle at which diffraction occurs and the intensity of the scattered beams are dependent on the crystal structure of the material. By analyzing this diffraction pattern, researchers can determine the unit cell dimensions, atomic positions, and even identify unknown crystalline substances. XRD is crucial in fields like materials science, chemistry, geology, and pharmaceuticals for phase identification, purity analysis, and structural characterization.

Electron diffraction and neutron diffraction are complementary techniques. Electron diffraction, often performed in a transmission electron microscope (TEM), uses electrons as the probing radiation. It is particularly useful for studying very small crystals or thin films due to the strong interaction of electrons with matter. Neutron diffraction, on the other hand, is valuable for locating light atoms, such as hydrogen, which are difficult to detect with X-rays, and for studying magnetic structures due to the magnetic moment of neutrons. These diffraction methods collectively provide powerful tools for understanding the fundamental atomic and molecular arrangements that dictate the macroscopic properties of matter.
