Diesel fuel is characterized by its cetane number, which is a measure of its ignition quality. A higher cetane number indicates a shorter ignition delay and smoother combustion. Other important properties include viscosity, density, and sulfur content. Modern diesel fuels often have low sulfur content to reduce harmful emissions.

Diesel engines and their fuel are widely used in transportation, including trucks, buses, trains, and some cars, as well as in many industrial and agricultural applications like generators and heavy machinery. The efficiency of diesel engines and the energy density of diesel fuel contribute to its popularity in these sectors. However, concerns regarding nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter emissions have led to stricter regulations and the development of cleaner diesel technologies.
