Dieselbrensel, commonly known as diesel fuel, is a liquid fuel derived from crude oil. It is primarily used in diesel engines, which are internal combustion engines that use compression ignition. Unlike gasoline engines that use spark plugs to ignite the fuel-air mixture, diesel engines rely on the heat generated by compressing air to a high pressure and temperature to ignite the diesel fuel. This process of compression ignition makes diesel engines generally more fuel-efficient and produce more torque than comparable gasoline engines.

The composition of diesel fuel is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons. It typically contains a higher proportion of heavier hydrocarbon molecules than gasoline. Its cetane number is a measure of its ignition quality, indicating how readily it will combust. A higher cetane number means shorter ignition delay and smoother combustion. Diesel fuel is also characterized by its energy density, which contributes to its efficiency in engines.

Diesel engines and their fuel are widely used in heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks, buses, trains, and ships, as well as in agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and some passenger cars. The combustion process in diesel engines can produce particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, which are regulated by emissions standards in many countries. Modern diesel engines incorporate advanced technologies like diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to reduce these emissions.
