Diaginalizálható is a mathematical term used in linear algebra. A square matrix is called diagonalizable if it is similar to a diagonal matrix. This means that there exists an invertible matrix P such that P⁻¹AP is a diagonal matrix D. The diagonal entries of D are the eigenvalues of A, and the columns of P are the corresponding eigenvectors of A.

The concept of diagonalizability is important because diagonal matrices are much easier to work with than general matrices. For instance, raising a diagonal matrix to a power is trivial: you simply raise each diagonal entry to that power. This property extends to diagonalizable matrices, allowing for simpler calculations of matrix powers.

A matrix is diagonalizable if and only if it has a full set of linearly independent eigenvectors. This means that the geometric multiplicity of each eigenvalue (the dimension of the eigenspace) must equal its algebraic multiplicity (the multiplicity of the eigenvalue as a root of the characteristic polynomial). For example, a matrix with distinct eigenvalues is always diagonalizable.

In practical applications, diagonalizability simplifies many problems in areas like solving systems of differential equations, analyzing Markov chains, and performing principal component analysis. If a matrix is not diagonalizable, it can still be brought into a related form, such as Jordan normal form, which provides similar analytical benefits, though with more complex structures.
