Depth perception refers to the visual ability to perceive the world in three dimensions and to judge the distance of objects. It is a fundamental aspect of human vision, allowing us to navigate our environment, interact with objects, and avoid hazards. Our brains construct a three-dimensional representation of the world using a variety of cues.

There are two main categories of depth cues: monocular and binocular. Monocular cues can be perceived with only one eye and include relative size, interposition, linear perspective, texture gradient, and motion parallax. For example, objects that appear smaller are generally perceived as being farther away, and if one object blocks the view of another, the blocking object is perceived as closer.

Binocular cues require both eyes and are crucial for precise distance judgments. The most important binocular cue is binocular disparity, also known as retinal disparity. Because our eyes are horizontally separated, they receive slightly different images of the same object. The brain processes these differences to calculate depth. Convergence, the inward turning of the eyes when focusing on a nearby object, is another binocular cue.

Depth perception is not static; it can be influenced by factors such as experience, attention, and the context of the visual scene. Impairments in depth perception can arise from various conditions affecting the eyes, optic nerves, or the visual processing centers of the brain, impacting an individual's ability to perform everyday tasks safely and efficiently.
