depolarizrii
Depolarization is a term used in various scientific fields to describe a process where a separation of electric charge is reduced or eliminated. In biology, particularly in neuroscience, depolarization refers to the change in a cell's membrane potential to be less negative. This occurs when positively charged ions, such as sodium (Na+) or calcium (Ca2+), flow into the cell. This influx of positive charge makes the inside of the cell less negative compared to the outside. When the membrane potential reaches a certain threshold, it can trigger an action potential, which is a rapid, transient change in membrane potential that is fundamental to nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction. The resting membrane potential of most cells is negative due to the unequal distribution of ions across the cell membrane, with more positive ions outside than inside. Depolarization moves this potential closer to zero.
In physics, depolarization can refer to the process of removing or reducing polarization in a dielectric material
