Demokratía refers to a form of government in which power is vested in the people and exercised directly or through freely elected representatives. This concept is central to the development of democratization, a process that has unfolded differently across various regions and time periods.

Ancient Athens in Greece is often cited as the birthplace of democratía, with its establishment in 500 BCE. Here, citizens were granted the right to participate in decision-making processes through direct democracy, including the power to vote on legislation and select public officials. However, this system fell short of modern standards of inclusivity, as only male citizens who owned property were eligible to participate.

Demokratía as it is understood today is characterized by the protection of individual rights and the separation of powers into legislative, executive, and judicial branches. These elements aim to prevent the concentration of power and ensure accountability within the government.

Democratía has spread across the world, shaped by theoretical reflections, social and economic contexts, and related revolutionary movements. Notable theories that have influenced the development of democratía include those of John Locke and John Stuart Mill, who stressed the importance of individual rights, equality, and social justice.

Critiques of democratía have emerged over issues such as inadequate representation, unequal access to voting, and shortcomings in government accountability. Human rights abuses and, in some cases, the perpetuation of social injustices have added complexity to interpretations and implementations of democratía.
