Demodulacja is the process of extracting information from a modulated carrier signal. Modulation is the process of encoding information onto a carrier wave, and demodulation is the reverse process, retrieving the original information. This is a fundamental concept in telecommunications and signal processing.

Different types of modulation require different demodulation techniques. For amplitude modulation (AM), the demodulator typically detects the envelope of the carrier signal, which varies in proportion to the original information. For frequency modulation (FM), demodulators measure the instantaneous frequency of the carrier signal, which deviates according to the information. Phase modulation (PM) demodulators track changes in the phase of the carrier wave.

Common demodulation circuits include envelope detectors for AM, discriminators or phase-locked loops (PLLs) for FM, and correlators or PLLs for PM. The choice of demodulator depends on the specific modulation scheme used and the desired performance characteristics, such as noise immunity and bandwidth efficiency.

The output of a demodulator is the original baseband signal, which can then be processed, amplified, or converted into a human-perceivable form, such as audio or video. Demodulation is essential for receiving and interpreting transmitted information in radio, television, Wi-Fi, cellular communication, and many other wireless and wired systems. Without demodulation, the transmitted carrier signal would be unintelligible.
