If set A is a subset of set B, denoted as A ⊆ B, it means that for every element x, if x is in A, then x must also be in B. The set A is called a proper subset of B, denoted as A ⊂ B, if A is a subset of B and A is not equal to B. This implies that there must be at least one element in B that is not in A.

Every set is considered a subset of itself. The empty set, denoted by ∅, is a subset of every set, including itself. The concept of the delmængderelation is fundamental in set theory and is used to build more complex set operations and structures. It allows for the classification and comparison of sets based on their contents. For instance, in a universal set U, the collection of all possible subsets of U forms a power set, where the delmængderelation governs the arrangement and relationships between these subsets. This relation is transitive, meaning if A ⊆ B and B ⊆ C, then A ⊆ C. It is also reflexive, as A ⊆ A. However, it is not symmetric, as A ⊆ B does not necessarily imply B ⊆ A unless A = B.
