Deinterleaving is a process used in digital signal processing and data transmission to reconstruct a single, complete signal from two or more interleaved signals. Interleaving is a technique where data is intentionally mixed or scrambled to improve its resilience against errors or to optimize transmission bandwidth. For example, in video broadcasting, interlacing is a method of displaying a full frame of video by transmitting two fields, each containing half the scan lines of the full frame, in alternating succession. When these fields arrive at the receiver, they need to be deinterleaved to create a smooth, complete image.

The deinterleaving process essentially reverses the interleaving operation. It takes the received signals and separates them according to the original interleaving pattern. For video, this means combining the odd-numbered scan lines from one field with the even-numbered scan lines from the other field to form a single progressive frame. In data transmission, deinterleaving might involve rearranging blocks of data that were split and sent in a specific order. The goal is always to restore the original sequence and integrity of the data or signal.

Different deinterleaving algorithms exist, varying in complexity and effectiveness depending on the type of interleaving and the desired output quality. Simple methods might just concatenate the signals, while more advanced techniques employ motion estimation and compensation to handle moving objects in video, preventing artifacts like jagged edges or flickering. The choice of deinterleaving method is crucial for achieving optimal playback or data reconstruction.
