Degynes, also known as alkynes, are a class of unsaturated hydrocarbons characterized by the presence of at least one carbon-carbon triple bond. The general formula for a simple alkyne with one triple bond is CnH2n-2, where n is the number of carbon atoms. The simplest alkyne is ethyne, also known as acetylene, with the formula C2H2.

The carbon-carbon triple bond consists of one sigma bond and two pi bonds. This strong triple bond makes alkynes highly reactive, particularly in addition reactions. They readily react with halogens, hydrogen halides, and hydrogen gas. For instance, the addition of hydrogen to ethyne produces ethene and then ethane.

Alkynes are typically linear molecules due to the sp hybridization of the carbon atoms involved in the triple bond. This hybridization results in a bond angle of 180 degrees. Terminal alkynes, where the triple bond is at the end of a carbon chain, have an acidic hydrogen atom attached to one of the triply bonded carbons. This acidity allows for reactions with strong bases, forming acetylides.

Industrially, ethyne is primarily produced by the hydrolysis of calcium carbide. It finds applications in welding due to its high flame temperature when burned with oxygen. Other alkynes are used as intermediates in the synthesis of various organic compounds, including polymers and pharmaceuticals. Their unique reactivity and structural properties make them valuable building blocks in organic chemistry.
