The deep seabed refers to the ocean floor at depths greater than 200 meters. This vast and largely unexplored region is characterized by extreme pressure, complete darkness, and near-freezing temperatures. Despite these harsh conditions, the deep seabed supports a unique and diverse array of life, adapted to survive in this extreme environment. Organisms found here include specialized fish, invertebrates, and microbial communities, many of which exhibit bioluminescence and rely on chemosynthesis or marine snow for sustenance.

Geologically, the deep seabed is composed of oceanic crust, which is constantly being created at mid-ocean ridges and consumed at subduction zones. It also contains significant mineral deposits, such as polymetallic nodules, cobalt-rich crusts, and massive sulfides, which have attracted interest for potential commercial extraction. These mineral resources are rich in metals like copper, nickel, cobalt, and manganese, essential for various industrial applications, including renewable energy technologies.

However, the potential for deep-sea mining raises significant environmental concerns. The deep seabed ecosystem is thought to be fragile and slow to recover from disturbance. Mining activities could disrupt habitats, release sediment plumes, and potentially harm unique species, many of which are not yet fully understood. International bodies, like the International Seabed Authority, are tasked with regulating activities in the deep seabed beyond national jurisdiction, aiming to balance potential resource development with the imperative of environmental protection.
