Declaratives, often referred to as declarative statements, are sentences that state a fact, opinion, or idea. They are a fundamental part of natural language, serving to convey information. Unlike interrogative sentences (questions) or imperative sentences (commands), declaratives do not seek information or issue instructions. Instead, they assert something.

The structure of a declarative sentence typically follows a subject-verb pattern, although variations exist. For example, "The sun is shining" is a simple declarative sentence. "I believe that honesty is the best policy" expresses an opinion declaratively. In programming, the term "declarative programming" refers to a paradigm where the programmer describes the desired outcome without explicitly stating the control flow or steps to achieve it. This is in contrast to imperative programming, which focuses on how to achieve a result. Examples of declarative languages include SQL for databases and HTML for web page structure. The core principle in both linguistics and computer science is to declare what something is or what should be, rather than dictating the precise sequence of operations to get there.
