Decimalpræfikser, also known as SI prefixes or metric prefixes, are a series of letters or symbols that are attached to a unit of measurement to indicate a multiple or submultiple of that unit. These prefixes are standardized by the International System of Units (SI) and are used globally to simplify the expression of very large or very small quantities.

The prefixes represent powers of ten. For example, the prefix "kilo" (symbol k) means 1000, so a kilometer is 1000 meters. The prefix "milli" (symbol m) means 0.001 or 1/1000, so a millimeter is 0.001 meters. This system allows for a consistent and logical way to denote magnitudes.

Commonly used prefixes include kilo (k) for 10^3, mega (M) for 10^6, giga (G) for 10^9, and tera (T) for 10^12 for larger quantities. For smaller quantities, common prefixes are centi (c) for 10^-2, milli (m) for 10^-3, micro (µ) for 10^-6, and nano (n) for 10^-9. There are also prefixes for even larger and smaller magnitudes, such as yotta (Y) for 10^24 and yocto (y) for 10^-24.

The use of decimal prefixes is crucial in scientific, engineering, and everyday contexts to avoid writing out long strings of zeros or using scientific notation excessively. For instance, instead of writing 1,000,000 watts, one can write 1 megawatt (1 MW). Similarly, 0.000001 seconds is more conveniently expressed as 1 microsecond (1 µs). This standardization enhances clarity and reduces the potential for errors in measurement and communication.
