Dawaycie is a term used primarily in the eastern Slovak and western Czech cultural regions to describe a specific type of nonverbal communication among close relations. The word derives from the old Slavic verb davati, meaning "to give," and its suffix -cie indicates an action. In this context, a dawacje refers to a brief, almost involuntary, nod or slight head lift that signals understanding or agreement without verbal confirmation. The gesture is typically performed when one party wishes to show respect or to subtly encourage the speaker to continue. It is also employed as a courtesy in family gatherings, weddings, and traditional celebrations, where verbal expression of affirmation is considered polite.
Anthropologists note that dawacje is similar to the Japanese kaizen gesture or the Turkish selam ekmeği in
