The daughter centriole is a newly formed centriole that originates from a mature mother centriole. Centrioles are cylindrical organelles found in most animal cells and play a crucial role in cell division and the formation of cilia and flagella. A mature cell typically contains a pair of centrioles, oriented perpendicularly to each other, which together form the centrosome.

During the cell cycle, the centrosome duplicates. One of the existing mature centrioles, the mother centriole, serves as a template for the assembly of a new daughter centriole. This process involves the formation of a procentriole, which gradually elongates and matures into a fully functional daughter centriole. The daughter centriole is initially smaller than the mother centriole and lacks some associated proteins.

Once the daughter centriole matures, it acquires its own set of associated proteins and eventually duplicates along with its mother centriole. By the time of cell division, the cell will have two centrosomes, each containing a pair of centrioles (one mother and one daughter). These centrosomes then migrate to opposite poles of the cell to organize the spindle fibers that separate chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis. The daughter centriole eventually becomes a mother centriole in the subsequent cell cycle, capable of templating the formation of a new daughter centriole. This continuous cycle of duplication and maturation ensures the presence of functional centrosomes for cell division and other essential cellular processes.
