Dataquota, or data quota, refers to a limit placed on the amount of data a user, account, or resource may store or transfer within a defined period or on a given system. Quotas are used to prevent overconsumption of shared infrastructure, protect service reliability, and help manage costs. They can apply to storage capacity (space on a disk, bucket, or database) or to data transfer (outbound bandwidth or data flow).

Quotas come in several forms. Storage quotas cap the amount of data that can be stored by an entity, while data transfer quotas limit how much data can be transmitted. Quotas can be soft, allowing limited overage with warnings, or hard, enforcing immediate restrictions. They may be imposed per user, per group, per application, or per resource (such as a project or bucket) and can be global or scoped to a particular service instance.

Enforcement methods include monitoring and metering, alerting when thresholds are approached, throttling after a limit is reached, or blocking further writes or transfers. In many systems, quotas are implemented at different layers: file systems (for example, Unix-like disk quotas on ext4 or XFS, and Windows Disk Quotas), cloud storage platforms (per-bucket or per-account caps), and application layers (mailbox quotas, database row or table quotas). Some environments use grace periods or automated cleanup policies to reclaim space or redirect excess usage.

Administration involves defining policy, setting thresholds, configuring grace rules, and generating usage reports. Data quotas help balance fairness, predictability, and cost control in shared environments, while presenting operational challenges such as accurate accounting, performance impact, and the potential for user disruption if limits are too restrictive.
