This length varies significantly throughout the year and is primarily determined by the Earth's axial tilt and its orbit around the Sun. On the equinoxes, which occur around March 20th and September 22nd, day and night are approximately equal in length across the globe.

As the Earth orbits the Sun, its tilted axis causes different hemispheres to receive more direct sunlight at different times. During the summer solstice, typically around June 21st, the hemisphere tilted towards the Sun experiences its longest day and shortest night. Conversely, the winter solstice, around December 21st, marks the shortest day and longest night for that same hemisphere.

The further one moves from the equator, the more pronounced the seasonal variations in dagslängder become. At the poles, this variation is extreme, with periods of continuous daylight in summer and continuous darkness in winter.
