Dýchaním is the Czech word for breathing. It refers to the physiological process by which living organisms inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. This process is essential for life, as oxygen is required for cellular respiration, the metabolic process that produces energy for cells.

In humans and many other animals, breathing is facilitated by a respiratory system, which typically includes lungs or gills. The act of breathing involves the coordinated action of muscles, such as the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, which expand and contract the chest cavity, drawing air into and expelling it from the lungs.

The exchange of gases, oxygen and carbon dioxide, occurs in the alveoli, tiny air sacs in the lungs. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the thin walls of the alveoli into the bloodstream, where it is transported to the body's tissues. Carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, diffuses from the blood into the alveoli and is expelled from the body during exhalation.

Breathing is largely an involuntary process, controlled by the respiratory centers in the brainstem. However, it can also be consciously controlled to some extent, allowing for activities such as holding one's breath or hyperventilating. The rate and depth of breathing can vary depending on factors such as physical activity, emotional state, and environmental conditions. Disruptions to normal breathing can indicate various health issues, ranging from mild respiratory infections to severe conditions like asthma or pneumonia.
