Cukormolekulák, or sugar molecules, are a diverse group of carbohydrates that serve essential roles in living organisms. The simplest sugar molecules are monosaccharides, such as glucose and fructose, which are single sugar units. These are the primary building blocks for more complex carbohydrates. Disaccharides are formed when two monosaccharides are joined together, with common examples including sucrose (table sugar), lactose (milk sugar), and maltose. Polysaccharides are long chains of monosaccharides linked together, and they can be either structural, like cellulose in plants, or for energy storage, like starch in plants and glycogen in animals.

The defining characteristic of sugar molecules is the presence of a carbonyl group (C=O) and multiple hydroxyl groups (-OH). This chemical structure allows them to be soluble in water and readily involved in metabolic processes. In biological systems, sugars are crucial for providing energy through cellular respiration. The sweetness perceived by humans is a direct interaction between sugar molecules and taste receptors on the tongue. Different sugar structures result in varying degrees of sweetness and metabolic fates.
