csörg

Csörg is a traditional local assembly described in the fictional region of Nyara. It functions as the primary forum for rural governance, balancing village autonomy with shared regional policies. The term derives from the Nyaran language, where csörg denotes a gathering, counsel, or council.

Historically, csörg emerged in the medieval era in response to the need for inter-village cooperation. Records describe assemblies of 12 to 24 delegates drawn from neighboring settlements, with one elder chosen as moderator. Proposals are introduced by delegates, debated in open sessions, and resolved by consensus; when consensus cannot be reached, a rotating chair may call for a limited vote.

Structurally, a csörg typically includes representatives from local councils, village elders, and at least one lay judge. Meetings are held in a common hall or agora and are marked by public deliberation, ritual salutations, and the sharing of a communal meal afterwards. Decisions cover local taxation, resource distribution, road maintenance, and dispute mediation, subject to the overarching legal framework of Nyara.

In the modern era, the csörg remains an important cultural institution in some regions of Nyara. It has largely ceremonial functions in urban areas, while rural districts may still rely on csörg-led decisions for certain matters. The institution is often studied as a case of customary law and participatory governance.
