Csereügylet, often translated as barter or exchange, refers to a transaction where goods or services are traded directly for other goods or services without the use of money. This is one of the oldest forms of commerce, predating the widespread use of currency. In a csereügylet, each party acts as both buyer and seller, offering something they possess and desiring something another party offers in return.

The success of a csereügylet relies on a double coincidence of wants, meaning that each party must have what the other wants and want what the other has. For example, a farmer might want tools and have surplus grain, while a blacksmith might need grain and have tools to offer. If their needs align, a barter can occur.

While simple and effective in many situations, csereügylet can be inefficient. Difficulties arise in valuing disparate goods, dividing items, and storing value. The lack of a universally accepted medium of exchange can also complicate larger or more complex transactions. Despite these limitations, barter arrangements still exist today, particularly in informal economies, for specific types of transactions, or when monetary systems are unstable. Modern forms of exchange that resemble barter include trading on online platforms or through community swap meets.
