The term does not have a single formal standard in peer‑reviewed literature, but it is often defined in a basic form as the fraction of the universe that is covered by at least one agent.

Definition and variants: Let U be a finite set of items or locations, and let S1, ..., Sk be the subsets of U covered by each agent. The basic coverageafhank is C = |∪_{i=1}^k S_i| / |U|. Variants introduce weights or probabilities p_i(x) for agent i covering element x, yielding a probabilistic version where coverage is the likelihood that an element is covered by at least one agent.
