Counterroller is a term used in mechanical engineering and manufacturing to describe a roller positioned opposite a drive roller within roll-to-roll or web-processing equipment. The counterroller and drive roller form a nip through which a flexible material—such as paper, film, fabric, or rubber stock—passes. The counterroller provides support and counteracting force to maintain tension, alignment, and control of the web as it moves.

In operation, the drive roller applies torque to move the material while the counterroller supplies an appropriate nip pressure. This pressure, along with the roller surface material and finish, determines grip, tracking, and resistance to slippage. The configuration helps stabilize the web during high-speed operation and can influence thickness uniformity and edge routing.

Counterrollers are typically constructed with materials suitable for the process, such as steel cores for rigidity and heat resistance, and covers of rubber, polyurethane, or composites to adjust grip. They may be fixed or adjustable; adjustable counterrollers allow changes to tension and nip width during production. Actuation for adjustment can be manual, spring-loaded, hydraulic, or pneumatic.

Applications include printing presses, laminating and coating lines, textile finishing, paper processing, and film extrusion. They are used to maintain constant web tension, improve tracking and edge control, and support heavy or wide rolls. In some contexts, the term may refer to an opposing rolling element in other machinery, so interpretation depends on the specific industry or equipment.
