Cosetverdeling is a term used in group theory to describe the collection of all distinct left (or right) cosets of a subgroup within a larger group. When a subgroup H is a normal subgroup of a group G, the set of left cosets is identical to the set of right cosets. In this specific case, the set of cosets forms a new group under the operation of coset multiplication, known as the quotient group or factor group, denoted as G/H.

The concept of coset distribution is fundamental to understanding group homomorphisms and the structure of groups. Lagrange's Theorem states that for a finite group G and a subgroup H, the order of H divides the order of G. The number of distinct left (or right) cosets of H in G is equal to the index of H in G, denoted [G:H], which is equal to the order of G divided by the order of H. Therefore, the cosets partition the group G into disjoint sets, with each set having the same number of elements as the subgroup H.

When a subgroup is not normal, the set of left cosets and the set of right cosets are generally different. However, they still form partitions of the group G. The study of cosets helps in classifying groups and understanding their internal relationships. It provides a framework for decomposing complex group structures into simpler components.
