Contraktechnieken, often translated as contraction techniques, refers to methods used to shorten or compress text while retaining its essential meaning. These techniques are frequently employed in natural language processing and information retrieval to reduce the computational resources required for processing and storage, and to improve the efficiency of search algorithms.

One common contraktechniek is the removal of common words, known as stop words, such as "the," "a," "is," and "and," which are deemed to have little semantic value. Another approach involves stemming, which reduces words to their root form, for example, transforming "running," "ran," and "runs" into "run." Lemmatization is a more sophisticated form of stemming that considers the morphological analysis of words to return the base or dictionary form of a word, known as the lemma. For instance, "better" would be reduced to "good."

In some contexts, contraktechnieken can also encompass the summarization of longer texts into shorter versions. This can be achieved through extractive summarization, where key sentences are selected from the original text, or abstractive summarization, where new sentences are generated to capture the main ideas. The goal of all contraktechnieken is to create a more concise representation of information without significant loss of meaning.
