The owner code identifies the registered owner or operator; the serial number differentiates individual containers; the check digit is used for error detection.

Usage: The containernummer is used in documentation such as bills of lading and cargo manifests, in port and terminal operations, and in IT systems for tracking and data interchange among carriers, shippers, and customs. It is printed on the container’s side and is commonly read by barcode scanners and RFID devices.
