Collagenase 2, also known as matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), is a specific type of enzyme belonging to the matrix metalloproteinase family. These enzymes are primarily involved in the breakdown and remodeling of the extracellular matrix, a complex network of proteins and molecules that surrounds cells. MMP-8 is particularly known for its strong activity against collagen, a major structural protein in connective tissues.

This enzyme is predominantly expressed by neutrophils, a type of white blood cell crucial for the innate immune response.
