codifions

Codifions are a conceptual unit used in discussions of codification systems to denote a discrete packet of codified information. A codifion combines a code value with metadata that describes its type, constraints, provenance, and intended use, enabling consistent exchange and automated processing across systems.

In typical models, a codifion can be primitive, containing a single value, or composite, assembling multiple codifions into records or sequences. Many formulations include self-describing variants in which the codifion carries its own schema references or embedded validation rules. Common properties include an identifier, data type, allowed values or range, cardinality, version, and provenance information such as source and timestamp.

Uses and examples: Codifions are proposed as building blocks for data dictionaries, codebooks, metadata schemas, and knowledge graphs. They facilitate interoperability by providing a uniform unit that can be encoded, validated, and versioned. For instance, a codifion representing a resource title might specify a string type, maximum length, language, and a provenance timestamp; a codifion for a taxon could include a URI, label, and authority.

Status and origin: The term codifion is not standardized across disciplines and appears primarily in theoretical discussions and practice-oriented proposals about codification. Its precise definition, scope, and recommended practices vary by domain and author.
