Codicology is the scholarly study of manuscripts as physical objects, focusing on their materiality, production, structure, and transmission. It examines the writing supports (parchment, vellum, papyrus, or paper), inks and pigments, bindings, clasps, and housing, as well as the internal organization of a manuscript: gatherings or quires, foliation, signatures, rubrication, and marginalia.

The field aims to reconstruct how manuscripts were produced and used. By analyzing quire structure, script, decoration, and evidence of repairs, codicologists seek to infer dates, places of origin, scribal practices, and ownership histories. The codex form is studied for its binding structures and page order, while scrolls are treated as a related but distinct object.

Codicology is closely related to palaeography (the study of handwriting) and to book history. Methods include physical inspection, material analysis (such as ink composition and parchment preparation), conservation reports, and, increasingly, digital imaging and metadata techniques. Digital codicology extends traditional study with high-resolution imaging, multispectral scans, and online catalogs to document codicological features and provenance.

Applications of codicology include dating manuscripts, tracing trade and workshop networks, identifying scribal hands, and informing textual criticism by clarifying readings likely original to a manuscript’s construction. The discipline continues to evolve through interdisciplinary collaboration and digitization, enhancing understanding of how manuscripts were produced, used, and circulated across cultures and periods.
